We will throw perfection out the window, giving us permission to use simplification, bold strokes, exaggeration and mark-making as we explore shapes, space and color in this intense fun 3-day workshop taught by PSA Master Pastelist, Jen Evenhus.  Our focus will be “Less is More” - the more you limit yourself, the more creative and innovative you become. Fewer choices frees the mind to concentrate on the essentials - DESIGN, VALUE, COLOR, MOVEMENT.

Students will work from landscape photos provided by instructor, from their own photo reference, and still life objects. Weather permitting, we’ll do some plein air sketching. Along with a good variety of soft and hard pastels, and good sanded pastel paper, other materials like ink, markers, brushes and graphite will be used. We will use contemporary impressionist, expressionist, and abstract styles as we explore shapes, composition, positive and negative space, bold vs neutral color and mark-making.

There will be challenging exercises, instructor demos, one-on-one coaching, critiques, discussions, and painting throughout this intense fun 3-day workshop with PSA Master Pastelist Jen Evenhus. Come with an open mind and ready to do things a bit different than you normally do!

FINAL WORKSHOP OF 2016

Invest in yourself and your art!

There are just a few spots open in this fun, intense pastel painting workshop.
We'll have new exercises and work on moving from mundane to masterpiece!
Visit their website www.emeraldartcenter.org or call 541-726-8595.

"Jen, thank you for the workshop on the Cape. Your class changed me profoundly! When I first got started painting I was all about color and painting fast. I didn't know what I was doing, but it was what felt right. Then as I started honing my skills I slowed down, became more deliberate, and worked in more detail. I recently had been looking for new inspiration. Your workshop did it for me. It reminded me of the way I started, fast and colorful, and the joy has returned to my painting sessions. Thank you for reminding me why I love to paint!
Thank you for freeing me up. Thank you."

2016 WORKSHOPS

“The Beauty of Imperfection”
Pastel Workshops

We throw perfection out the window, giving us permission to use an impressionist abstract
style employing simplification, bold strokes, exaggeration, mark-making and
happy little accidents as we explore shapes, design, space, color and movement in
these fun, intense 3-day workshops with PSA Master Pastelist, Jen Evenhus.
Each workshop has its own "theme" or "focus" like “Finding Your Voice,"
"Less is More" and "Mood, Magic, Melody."

There will be demos, timed exercises, drawing, painting, one-on-one coaching,
group critiques, and more painting.  Emphasis is always on composition, value,
and movement. We'll use ink, markers, stencils and more with
your pastels to create unique works of art.
We won’t create pretty pictures - we’ll create dynamic, eye-stopping masterpieces!

2016 WORKSHOPS

Dakota Art Center - Mt. Vernon, Washington
"The Beauty of Imperfection - Working in a Series"
The students learned why it's important to work in a series - to dig deep.
To create a cohesive body of work . . .

STUDENT WORK

Angela's abstract blew me away
Ted created a fabulous abstract from mailboxes found across the
road from the studio

Jude truly dug deep with this still life - trying to "discover" the torn paper wrapper
on the pastel that is slightly translucent and partially in the shade - quite a challenge!

Students did a self-critique with comments from others...

Denise talks about painting a pear within her still life

LaDonna puts the finishing touches on an abstract

INSTRUCTOR WORK

My first demo - 10-minutes - really like the roughness and transparency.
Showing students the first part of the 10-8-6-4 minute exercise.
These last 3 were part of the next exercise - taken from photo reference from
my trip to New Mexico last year ... students used same one - #1 Sunset Colors
#2 Winter   #3 Earth Colors. Ten minute paintings 6x8"

These two paintings were our Day 3 morning exercise - Using Analogous Color Scheme
The top one, I cheated a little because the underpainting was a bright pink.
Students really enjoyed this exercise and learned a lot.
My final demo of the workshop was my radish painting. It's become a tradition for me
to do a 10-minute painting of radishes.  This ended up being 25 minutes but it gave the
students a chance to see how I resolve problems. Students were then let loose to create
their own radish paintings -

themselves and their art career this year!

"The Beauty of Imperfection - Finding Your Voice"
Emerald Art Center in Springfield, Oregon   September 17, 18, 19

We will throw perfection out the window, giving us permission to use an impressionist abstract style employing simplification, bold strokes, exaggeration, mark-making and happy little accidents as we explore shapes, design, space and color in this intense 3-day workshop with PSA Master Pastelist, Jen Evenhus.

Our focus was “Finding Your Voice” - We had discussions, exercises, and fun activities that helped reveal your individual voice.  There will be demos, timed exercises, drawing, painting, one-on-one coaching, group critiques, and more painting.
We won’t create pretty pictures - we’ll create dynamic, eye-stopping masterpieces!
WE BEGAN WITH AN EXERCISE PAINTING WILDFLOWERS
I DID SEVERAL DEMOS so students knew what was expected of them.

Each quick sketch had different criteria...

Wildflower Demo 1 - "What you see is what you get"
Wildflower Demo 2 - "Exaggerated Color"
Wildfower Demo 3 - "Use Complementary Colors"
Wildflower Demo 4 - "Turn it into Winter"
_________________________________________________________________________________

STUDENT WORK - Wildflowers - FABULOUS!!

____________________________________________________________________________
OUR ABSTRACT EXERCISE PROVED TO BE A LITTLE BIT OF
A CHALLENGE FOR SOME - but that didn't stop them from
diving in and creating masterpieces!! They began with a snapshot I took at the Newport
Aquarium on the coast of fish and seaweed and light. We then went outside to gather
more reference - sketches, photos, gathering found items, and brought that into
the classroom to combine with the fish photo reference - here are some of the results.

_________________________________________________________________________________

STILL LIFE EXERCISE - 10, 8, 6, 4 MINUTES - TERRIFIC!!
THE ONLY CRITERIA WAS TO CHANGE UP COLORS and FINISH
IN THE ALLOTTED TIME

INSTRUCTOR DEMO

Thumbnail using permanent marker, mid-value gray pastel and a white pastel

"Mandarins and Emerald"  6x6" by Jen Evenhus
LAST DEMO - MY RADISH 10-MINUTE DEMO
The night before, I painted this in my head, selecting
the colors I would use. The only thing I could not
decide on was the color of the shadows
and that is what I had difficulty here - deciding on that color.

Here you can see I didn't really love the shadow color.
I love the last minute - that's when the background and negative
painting comes in - most fun!

After the 10 minutes was up, I added another color to
the shadow area and I think that helped.

STUDENTS' RADISH 10-MINUTE EXPERIENCE
Now it was the students' turn to tackle the 10-minute Radish painting.
Here are a few of them.

Thank you students for a fabulous 3 days!

"The Beauty of Imperfection"

Rock Hill Arts Council, South Carolina, October 2014
A Workshop . . .
Exploration, Discovery, New Vision

Throwing caution and perfectionism to the wind, my students painted fast and furious
at times, and counted brushstrokes other times, all the while working
with shapes, values, color, strokes and composition.

OUR FIRST EXERCISE was to divide newsprint into 4ths and do thumbnails, and using different criteria and a landscape photo reference, do 4 different TNs. Then do the same thing on a sheet of UArt using pastels. Shown here are my demos... and a student work with the following exercise of choosing their favorite and enlarging it to a full 9x12 sheet.

_____________________________________________
STILL LIFE is one of my favorite subjects to paint from. We began with thumbnails, or "messy minis" as I call them. We then chose our favorite and did a TEN-MINUTE painting. This is my still life and resulting ten-minute painting.

____________________________________________

This exercise was to do 4 small timed paintings using their favorite still life composition.
Here are a few student pieces.

________________________________________________
OUR WORKSHOP SPACE held us all comfortably. Students enjoyed taking a break and visiting each other's work areas to see the latest masterpiece.

_________________________________________________

STUDENTS wanted another demo so I got out the radishes... Love their shapes and the shadows they create... This was done in 10 Minutes plus 3 additional marks after they asked what I would do to it. I showed them and explained why. The first was to add the lighter blue to the purple shadows, the next was to add the two light marks right above the middle radish so that area could breathe... to open it up...

"Mood, Magic and Melody"

Pastel Workshop Aug. 14-17 in Oregon at the Emerald Art
Center proved to be a fabulous journey for everyone!

We set up in the main gallery with wonderful art surrounding us for inspiration!
I did several demos of the different exercises the students learned from:
This one above was 1) paint as is    2) change shape & size of objects
3) move objects and do mark-making  4) use opposite values
This was a timed demo from a reference photo that all students used
This was a 10-minute demo

This exercise was limited to 10 strokes - my demo
1) warm  2) cool  3) high key  4) low key

This exercise was timed - my demo
1) 15 minutes  2) 10 minutes  3) 8 minutes  4) 4 minutes

STUDENTS AT WORK AND STUDENT WORK - AMAZING!!
Students get up and talk about their work...

Our brave, fearless crew!  Paint on!

"Discover Pastels"
Beginners Workshop Photo Album

All of these photos were shot by my sister, Rachel Henkes, who also took the class and produced some real nice pieces and she was my assistant - thanks Rach!

My demo - from a photo of a couple of apricots on a plate. I used the plate
as a starting point for abstract colors and shapes in the background and used
shadows in the foreground for more design opps.  I love how lush the cots
turned out - there were a couple places in this where "happy accidents" happened
so I showed my students how you can leave those and let them enhance your work.

"What an enjoyable class! You are an excellent instructor. You negotiated the different talent levels and personalities very smoothly and made it fun. The demo was very educational and really showed what a talent you are. Thank you."   Eric

There were so many masterpieces created in this class - love this one - look at that color! Look at the depth - fabulous!

The photo we were working from for this exercise is at the bottom.
And look where this artist went . . . gorgeous!!

"I had a fantastic time at the workshop! So many new friends met and new things learned. Push Hard! Thumbnails! Don't be a slave to the reference. Happy accidents! Go ahead and do it and see how it turns out! Confident strokes! Paint and paint some more! Thanks, Jennifer, it was great." Cindy

Jen showing students how to use thumbnails as a tool - to see the positive and negative shapes, decide on the composition, and to change things up - move a tree, take out a rock, change the horizon line.

"Had a fabulous time at your pastel workshop! Made art and new friends--doubly blessed. So much fun, still doing my happy dance. Your demonstrations, information, suggestions and encouragement were so appreciated. You're an excellent teacher. I'm already looking forward to your next class. Pybus was a perfect venue too." Sandy

"... but these are so pretty, can I just look at them for a while
before I tear off the paper and break them?  Please?

SOUTHWEST week here in Scottsdale, Cave Creek and Carefree has been a kick . . . so glad I brought my pastels - looking back on these is magical . . . the layers of orange and turquoise, the mark-making, the decision-making, it's all just a big experiment backed up by 40+ years of painting. Each of these paintings began with a "plan" - a design, a pattern, a feeling - contemplation on which color to use when... continually asking myself "what if . . . " what if I put purple over the orange and let just a bit peek through; what if I put marks here and then partially cover them up; what if that spikey plant behind the cactus turned into a black and white design . . .
