Festive Friday

"Festive Friday" has a happy, festive feel. I love the contrast between the orange slices and the green plate, while the yellow plate echos the warmth of the oranges amongst the cool of the greens. Another thing I really like about this piece is the shadows under the orange slices. I think they turned out particularly well. Be sure to scroll down to see a detail.

Winter Daisies

Winter Daisies began as a traditional still life, but I quickly became bored with it. My goal for my work is to be way past 'traditional' cause that just ain't me. I love pushing paint around, and I like the idea of the viewer being able to 'kind of' tell what it is they are looking at, but we, as viewers need to have 'input' - to put ourselves, our experiences, into the work of art. That keeps the artwork fresh and ever-changing. So when you wake up and look at the painting day after day, you will see something new in it, or to put it another way, it will sing a different song for you each day. That's the joy of owning good art.
See a detail of it below.

Toy Truck

Toys make wonderful still life objects. I've been gradually unpacking my still life objects and bottles after our remodel, and found this one yesterday. I believe it is one that my son made, but it could also be one that my daughter made as well.

It truly is the reddest of reds and the wonderful old hot cocoa tin behind the truck cools down the whole scene with the cool turquoise on the label.

Egbert's Spectacles

Egbert is a unique name. The name of my maternal grandfather. A grandfather of whom we spoke little. No real mystery except that he suffered from one or more mental illnesses which, back then, were rarely diagnosed and treated, if there had been treatment.

I have very few memories of him and fewer objects which he owned. These spectacles are one of those. I love the design the shadows make and the warm color of the cloth upon which they lay.

Frog Pond II

Here's another view of the frog pond in Italy. I tried to simplify this a bit. Using shapes of the lily pads for abstract color and design, I really like the directional elements created by the stems of the lily pads that lead your eye around the painting.

Frog Pond I

So you want to see an artist in action? Take a look at "Frog Pond I" revised here compared to my first attempt below. The one below was just nagging me to paint over it and simplify the design. So I obliged! That was fun! Sorry if you wanted the other piece. It is now buried beneath this one!

Did anyone else love frogs as much as I did growing up? My 3 siblings and I were constantly collecting pollywogs and growing them into frogs in our respective bedrooms! It was so much fun watching little legs sprout and tails eventually fall off and their little bodies reshape themselves into tiny frogs. Our own science project right before our eyes!

Well, then, you can imagine my childish glee when I discovered a frog pond in the middle of our Italian Villa's huge lawn! It is filled with lily pads and lilies, and reeds that filter sunlight into a mosaic pattern laying on the surface of the pond. It wasn't until I was quite close that I saw a quick movement and heard the familiar 'plop' of a frog jumping into deeper water. Throughout the 14 days of our stay I tried my best to sneak up on the pond so I could see a frog or two, but they were always a jump ahead of me.

This oil is from photos and sketches of that pond, moving objects around to emphasize the designs and exaggerate the colors I find so appealing as an artist. I will be doing several pond paintings so if you are looking to add some Tiny Treasures to your collection, a "frog pond" painting or two would be perfect!
